After Simone Biles rocked the Olympics, Gymnastics has become quite popular once again. In this spirit, the not so short short-film Straight Up! Was created. This wonderful film combines gymnastics, relationships and growing up, in a hilariously moving film. Written by Javier Melgar Santoveña, who also plays the lead, the story captivates how former gymnasts try to get back in the game. They are all retired and have been retired for quite a few years, but they believe they still got what it takes to get back into it. Gymnastics as we all know isn’t easy and when age plays a crucial factor in an athletes’ life, a comeback proves to be quite difficult; growing up does take an emotional and physical toll and they are all feeling it.
Javier’s character is the most excited to come back but his past injuries and a recent brake up are keeping him from pushing forward. Sabina played by the beautiful Maria Hojas, is his lifelong friend and she is forced to go back even though she didn’t want to but seems to be bouncing back pretty well. On the other side, there is Melissa and Portia (Renata Ortiz and Mariah Feist), who met doing gymnastics and started a wonderful relationship but the appearance of the sexy Josephine (Fleur Noriega) at the gym might drive them apart. The film is full of tumbling, vaulting and falling, lots of falling and the way the character’s deal with it makes up for a hilarious concept.
Directed by Junaid Khan the film proves to be a hit. The film will be released online June 3rd as a short film, even though it runs almost an hour, as Javier said ‘’It was supposed to be a 15 minute short, but we ended up with so much good footage that we decided to go with it. And it was definitely worth it.’’ We agree, it’s a wonderful story of coming of age.
